Pour bien nous situer, Kateri Tekakwitha est née en 1656, donc 14 ans après la fondation de Montréal. La jeune colonie était donc en pleine expansion et les guerres iroquoises fréquentes.

Kateri c’est l’Amérindienne algonquine… Elle est la fille de «Fleur des prairies», une Algonquine chrétienne capturée aux Trois-Rivières par la nation iroquoise et intégrée au sein de la tribu des Agniers. «Fleur des prairies» épousera le chef de la tribu et conservera sa foi résolue, inébranlable jusqu’à son dernier jour. Emportée par l’épidémie de petite vérole, elle quitte ce monde et sa petite fille âgée de 4 ans qu’elle protègera toujours puisque la jeune Kateri héritera de sa foi profonde.

Kateri is the Algonquin Amerindian… She is the daughter of "Flower of the Meadows", a Christian Algonquin captured at Three Rivers by the Iroquois Nation who was integrated into the Mohawk tribe. "Flower of the Meadows" will marry the chief of the tribe and will keep alive an indefectible faith, unwavering until the last day. Carried away by the smallpox epidemic, she left this world and her little girl of 4 years old that she will always protect since young Kateri inherited her deep faith.

Kateri, en français Catherine, est le nom qu’elle reçut à son baptême à l’âge de 20 ans en l’honneur de Catherine de Sienne. À sa naissance sa mère l’appelait Clarté-du-Ciel (Uasheshkun). Nous savons qu’à l’âge de 4 ans, la petite vérole lui laissa des marques permanentes sur le visage et la rendit presqu’aveugle. Elle portait un grand châle sur sa tête et devait s’en servir pour protéger ses yeux des rayons du soleil. On lui donna alors le nom de Tekakwitha. Ce mot veut dire «Celle qui marche en hésitant», ou encore, «celle, qui doit enlever les choses devant elle et qui doit marcher lentement et à tâtons».

Kateri, Catherine in French, is the name she received at her baptism, at the age of 20, in honor of Catherine of Siena. At birth her mother gave her the name Clarté-du-Ciel (Uasheshkun). We know that at the age of 4, smallpox left permanent marks on her face and made her almost blind. She wore a shawl over her head and had to use it to protect her eyes from the sun. She then received the name of Tekakwitha. This word means "one who walks hesitantly," or also "she who has to remove the things in front of her and who needs to walk slowly and gropingly."
