En 1624, à Québec, les Récollets, avec les gouvernants, les habitants et plusieurs autochtones, ont confié à Joseph le sort du Canada en lui consacrant notre pays et son Église naissante. Quelques années plus tard, dans un songe à Marie de l’Incarnation, Joseph se présentait lui-même comme le gardien de ce «lieu».

In 1624, in Quebec, the Récollets, with the officials, the community and many indigenous entrusted the fate of Canada to Joseph by consecrating our country and its emerging Church to him. A few years later, Marie of the Incarnation had a dream where she saw Joseph presenting himself as the guardian of this “place”.

Le vœu des Pères Récollets a jailli au sein de l’urgence, un cri jailli de leur cœur et de leur foi profonde dans le tourbillon des vicissitudes du moment. Notre devise nationale «A Mari usque ad Mare» provient du psaume 72, verset 8 de la Bible : Et dominabitur a mari usque ad mare, et a flumine usque ad terminos terrae (Qu’il domine de la mer à la mer, et du fleuve jusqu’au bout de la terre). Ce verset a retenu l’attention quand, au moment de rédiger l’Acte de l’Amérique du Nord britannique en 1867, l’expression «dominion» est choisie, à la suggestion du Néo-brunswickois Samuel Leonard Tilley, pour désigner l’ensemble du Canada. Même s’il est rarement utilisé de nos jours, le nom officiel du Canada est encore «Dominion du Canada».

Le statut princier de saint Joseph impliqué dans son patronage sur le Canada n’est pas une simple marque de respect ou de dévotion que l’on exprimerait dans un titre, ou bien une autre façon de souligner la dignité de celui à qui Marie et Jésus furent confiés au cours de leur vie cachée. Il s’enracine dans la vocation originelle de l’homme et de la femme au gouvernement de la terre. En tant qu’intendants du Créateur dont ils sont l’image et la ressemblance, l’homme et la femme sont pour ainsi dire constitués «princes» de la création par Dieu.

Nous vous invitons à nous suivre et prier avec nous dans cette traversée où Joseph nous guidera à travers ce grand Dominion.

Our national motto “A Mari usque ad Mare” comes from Psalm 72, verse 8 of the Bible: Et dominabitur a mari usque ad mare, et a flumine usque ad terminos terrae (May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth). This verse attracted attention when the expression “dominion” was chosen, at the suggestion of New Brunswicker Samuel Leonard Tilley, to designate Canada as a whole, during the drafting of the British North America Act in 1867. Although it is rarely used today, the official name of Canada is still “Dominion of Canada”.

The princely status of Saint Joseph that is implied in his Canadian Patronage is not a simple mark of respect or devotion that can be expressed in a title, or another way of emphasizing the dignity of he who was chosen to take care of Mary and Jesus during their early life. It stems from man and woman’s original calling, that of governing the earth. As intendants of their Creator, of whom they are the image and the likeness, man and woman are, so to speak, appointed “princes” of creation by God.

….Pour le sanctuaire, l’année 2024 marque le centenaire de la construction du Pont des Chapelets érigé en 1924, en commémoration du miracle de la formation du pont de glace naturel qui s’est formé entre la fête de Joseph et l’Annonciation à Marie - du 19 au 25 mars1879. Comment ne pas y voir la complémentarité entre Joseph et Marie! .. For the sanctuary, 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Bridge of Rosaries erected in 1924, in commemoration of the miracle of the formation of the natural ice bridge which was formed between the feast of Joseph and the Annunciation to Mary - from March 19 to 25, 1879. How can we not see the complementarity between Joseph and Mary! ….
