Vous aimez la récupération? Il semble bien ici que nous assistions depuis quelques années à des transformations profondes de notre belle fête du 24 juin, connue sous le nom de «fête de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste».
Eh bien non. Ce n’est pas la fête nationale du peuple québécois; originellement, c’est la fête de tous les Canadiens français. Pas seulement ceux de la province de Québec, mais aussi ceux de la diaspora québécoise ou acadienne, de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, de l’Ontario, des Provinces maritimes et de l’Ouest canadien. Saint Jean Baptiste est aussi reconnu et fêté à la même date par tous les catholiques à travers le monde.

Are you fond of recuperation? For the past several years, we have been witnessing profound transformations to our June 24 celebrations, known as the "Saint John the Baptist Day."
Well, NO! It is not the official holiday of the Quebec nation; the feast of all French Canadians is its true origin. Not only those residing in Quebec, but ALL those belonging to the Quebec or Acadian diaspora, from New England to Ontario, and to the Maritimes, and out to the whole of Western Canada. Saint John the Baptist is also known and celebrated by all Catholics throughout the world.

Un peu d’histoire. Afin d’officialiser la fête de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, une démarche de reconnaissance de saint Jean Baptiste en tant que patron des Canadiens français est parvenue à Rome sous l’initiative de la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste. C’est alors que Pie X déclare dans une lettre adressée au clergé le 10 mai 1908: «Nous établissons, Nous constituons et Nous proclamons, saint Jean Baptiste patron spécial auprès de Dieu des fidèles franco-canadiens, tant de ceux qui sont au Canada que ceux qui vivent sur une terre étrangère.»
Ici au Québec, quelqu'un aurait-il mis à l’honneur cette grande fête à des fins politiques? Il semble que ce soit René Lévesque, en la déclarant Fête nationale du Québec le 11 mai 1977. Le Parti québécois serait-il un parti de récupération…?
En modifiant l’appellation de la fête, le Parti québécois fait ombrage à ce grand saint Jean Baptiste, précurseur du Christ.
Bonne nouvelle… saint Jean Baptiste demeure encore le patron des Canadiens français.
Alors bonne fête à tous les Canadiens français et à saint Jean Baptiste!

A bit of history does not hurt. In order to get recognition for the feast of Saint John the Baptist, an official petition, to acknowledge this great saint as patron to all French Canadians, was sent to Rome by the Society of Saint John the Baptist. Hence, Pope Pius X declared in a letter to the clergy, dated May 10, 1908: "We establish, We constitute and We proclaim Saint John the Baptist as special patron, from God, to all faithfull French Canadians, those residing in Canada, as well as those on a foreign land".
And who in Quebec would have used the prestige of such a great feast to serve political ends? It appears to be René Lévesque himself when he declared it Quebec's national holiday, on May 11, 1977. Isn't that recuperation practiced by the Party Quebecois?
By changing the motive to the feast, the PQ did cast a shadow over a great saint, the precursor of Christ. The good news is… Saint John the Baptist still remains the patron saint of ALL French Canadians.
