Foi, philosophie et science ont toujours eu des trajectoires plus ou moins entrelacées, bien que certains penseurs du dernier siècle aient tenté de les cloisonner. En fait, plusieurs scientifiques ont exprimé clairement leur foi et aussi, l'importance de la complémentarité entre foi, philosophie et science, pour mieux comprendre le réel. Ce fût le cas de Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), prêtre jésuite, géologue, paléontologue et penseur de renommée mondiale.
Penseur intrépide et d’une rigueur scientifique peu commune, qui fût difficilement compris, de son vivant, par l’Église et ses confrères, mais qui, par ailleurs, su argumenter contre l’idéologie matérialiste en vogue dans le monde scientifique de son époque.
Preuve qu’il était d'avant-garde, il faudra attendre les années 2000 pour parler d’une véritable ouverture de l’Église face à ces écrits. En 2004, un colloque international sur son œuvre s’est tenu à Rome, à l’Université pontificale grégorienne. Depuis, plusieurs papes et théologiens ont retenu et cité des éléments de sa pensée.
Mais l’ouverture s'est fait aussi sentir jusqu’en Chine, là même où Teilhard de Chardin a passé 23 ans de sa vie (1923-1946), comme chercheur sur des site archéologiques.
Alex Wang, traducteur chinois de La place de l’homme dans la nature (oeuvre fondatrice de Teilhard de Chardin), qui vient de paraître aux éditions Peking University Press, a donné une conférence à Pékin à l’automne 2015, évoquant le retour spirituel de Teilhard de Chardin en Chine:
«Encore quasiment inconnu en Chine il y a quelques années, Teilhard de Chardin est désormais avidement lu par les lecteurs chinois qui s’interrogent sur leur avenir à l’heure de la mondialisation accrue.» (site de l’Institut français à Pékin)
C’est au cœur de ce renouveau d’intérêt qu’apparaît, en 2014, pour notre plus grand plaisir, ce documentaire Teilhard et la Chine, que je vous présente ici et vous recommande vivement, surtout pour ceux qui désirent une première rencontre avec ce scientifique.
«Benoît Vermander, jésuite et professeur français du département de philosophie de l’Université Fundan, a présenté son film documentaire en 2014, à l’occasion du 50e anniversaire de l’établissement des relations diplomatiques entre la Chine et la France. Faith, philosophy and science have always had trajectories that are more or less intertwined, even though certain thinkers of the previous century attempted to keep them separate. In fact, several scientists clearly expressed their faith and the importance of the complementarity between faith, philosophy and science, in order to better understand reality. Such was the case for Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), Jesuit priest, geologist, palaeontologist and thinker of international renown.
Dauntless thinker of an uncommonly scientific rigor, he was not well understood during his lifetime, by the Church nor by his colleagues, but, in other respects, he knew how to argue against the materialistic ideologies that were popular in the scientific realm of his time.
The proof that he was ahead of his time: we will need to wait until the 21st century to speak about a genuine open-mindedness from the Church regarding his written works. In 2004, an international symposium on his works was held in Rome, at the Gregorian Pontifical University. Since then, several popes and theologians have taken note or referred to elements from his thinking.
But the open-mindedness was also felt all the way to China, the very place where Teilhard de Chardin spent 23 years of his life (1923-1946) as a researcher on archeological sites.
Alex Wang, Chinese translator for Man's Place in Nature (Theilard de Chardin’s founding work), recently published at the Peking University Press editions, gave a conference in Peking in the fall of 2015, recalling the spiritual return of Teilhard de Chardin in China:
“Still almost completely unknown in China a few years ago, Teilhard de Chardin is now avidly read by Chinese readers who question themselves on their future in these times of increased globalization” (Institut français à Pékin web site).
It is in the heart of this renewal of interest that appeared, in 2014, to our greatest delight, the following documentary Teilhard and China, that I am presenting and also strongly recommending to you, especially for those who wish to have a first encounter with this scientist.
“Benoît Vermander, Jesuit and French professor in the Philosophy department at the Fundan University, presented his documentary film in 2014, at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. He emphasized how much Teilhard de Chardin is now, and increasingly so, a factor of gathering and dialogue between the French and the Chinese.“
