Malgré les témoignages de plusieurs saints, les écrits publiés à son sujet, sans oublier tous les miracles que le saint Frère André lui a attribués, Joseph, comparativement à Marie et Jésus, demeure encore peu considéré dans notre 21e siècle. Du moins, même s’il l’est quelque peu, ce n’est pas représentatif en regard de ce qu’il est réellement.
La tradition lointaine de l’Église occidentale aussi bien que celle orientale représentent Joseph comme un vieillard faisant figure de père pour l’Enfant-Jésus et comme époux nécessaire mais presque insignifiant pour Marie. J’ai aussi observé que les icônes de l’Église orthodoxe le représentent en général à un âge plus avancé et tenant un rôle encore plus effacé que celles de l’Église occidentale.
Le fond du message de Fatima représente selon moi un changement important concernant la perception de Joseph dans l’histoire du salut. Ce 13 octobre 1917, au moment où des dizaines de milliers de personnes sceptiques, croyantes et incroyantes sont témoins de ce qu’on a appelé le « miracle du soleil », Marie choisit de se présenter aux trois enfants de Fatima avec Joseph et Jésus.

Despite the multiple testimonials given by the saints, the numerous writings published about him, not to mention all the miracles Brother André attributed to him, Joseph, compared to Mary and Jesus, is but little considered in our 21st century. Rather, if he may be somewhat considered, the consideration is not representative of what he his in reality.
The longstanding tradition of both the Western and Eastern Church, represent Joseph as an old man, a father figure for the infant Jesus and a necessary but almost insignificant spouse for Mary. I also noticed that compared to the Western iconography, the Orthodox icons generally represent a much older Joseph, playing an even subtler role.
In my opinion, the message of Fatima represents an important change concerning the way in which we perceive Joseph in the history of salvation. On October 13th, 1917, while thousands of skeptical people, believers and non believers, witnessed the “Miracle of the sun”, Mary chose to present herself to the three children of Fatima with Joseph and Jesus.

Cet événement du 13 octobre 1917 vient renverser la fausse conception de Joseph qui demeure. Il n’est pas qu’un figurant dans le tableau, Joseph «bénit» le monde avec l’Enfant-Jésus: est-ce possible? Lucie ne s’est pas trompée, Joseph, un laïc, bénit le monde. La scène est sans équivoque! Cette image de Marie accompagnée de Joseph et Jésus serait-elle la clé des questionnements actuels sur le rôle des femmes et des hommes dans l’église pour le 3e millénaire?
Des papes et des saints nous ont appelés à changer notre façon de voir Joseph. François a inauguré son mandat le 19 mars 2013, jour de la fête de Joseph. Sur son blason et il a choisi la fleur de nard comme symbole pour représenter Joseph. Il a remis le nom de Joseph dans les prières eucharistiques et confié à sa protection la Cité du Vatican. Par ces gestes, François signifie l’importance de Joseph pour lui, pour l’Église et le monde. Allons-nous enfin prendre le virage nécessaire à l’éminente découverte de Joseph avant le centième anniversaire de cette apparition qui sera célébrée en 2017?

This event overthrows an ongoing false conception about Joseph. He is not only a person on a painting, Joseph, “blesses” the world with the Infant Jesus: is this possible? Lucy did not mistake herself, Joseph, a layman, blesses the world. The message is without ambiguity! Could it be that this image of Mary accompanied by Joseph and Jesus is the key to the current questions on the role of women and men in the Church for the 3rd millennium?
Popes and saints have called us to change our perception of Joseph. Francis inaugurated his mandate on March 19th, 2013, feast of Joseph. On his coat of arms, he chose the nard as a symbol to represent Joseph. He inserted Joseph’s name in the Eucharistic prayers and entrusted the Vatican City to his protection. By these acts, Francis states the importance Joseph has for him, for the Church and the world. Will we finally make the necessary shift towards the eminent discovery of Joseph before the 100th anniversary of the events in Fatima which will be celebrated in 2017?

Si nous approfondissions davantage qui est Joseph et les liens qui l’unissent à Marie et Jésus, je pense que notre compréhension du message de l’Évangile ferait un bond en avant. Cela aurait une incidence sur l’équilibre de nos rapports les uns avec les autres, particulièrement dans les familles, la Trinité serait plus honorée, l’Église plus saine et les gouvernements plus cohérents. Ainsi, le Royaume annoncé dans l’Évangile serait plus près du cœur des femmes et des hommes d’aujourd’hui.

If we deepen our understanding of Joseph and the ties that unite him to Mary and Jesus, I believe that our understanding of the message of the Gospel will be propelled forward. This would also impact the harmony in our relationships with one another, especially in families, the Trinity would be better honored, the relationships in the Church more balanced and governments would be more coherent. Thus, the Kingdom proclaimed in the Gospel would be closer to the hearts of today’s men and women.

Il faut donc faire des gestes concrets pour qu’il soit considéré avec toute l’attention qui lui revient. Où l’Esprit Saint nous mène-t-il avec Joseph, Marie et Jésus? Je n’ai pas la réponse mais un geste dans cette voie est ici posé dans la région de l'Estrie (Québec) au Canada. La construction de cet ermitage dédié à Joseph, en même temps qu’à Marie et Jésus, va tout à fait dans ce sens.

We must take action so that Joseph may be considered with all the attention he deserves. Where will the Holy Spirit take us? I don’t have the answer, but a step in this direction was made, here in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, Canada. The construction of this hermitage dedicated to Joseph, as well as to Mary and Jesus, supports this initiative.

Monsieur Fortin a été pilote d’avion au tout début de sa carrière. Par la suite, il a enseigné à l’École Polytechnique de Montréal puis il a fondé une entreprise en technologie de pointe. Il travaille aujourd’hui à l’étranger à titre de Doyen de l’éducation pour un nouveau type d’université orientée vers l'innovation et l'entrepreneurship. Monsieur Fortin est père de 3 enfants et grand-père de 9 petits enfants.

Mr. Fortin was a pilot at the beginning of his career. Afterwards, he taught at Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, and founded a company in advanced technologies. He is now Dean of Education in a new type of university abroad, oriented towards innovation and entrepreneurship. Mr. Fortin is father of 3 children and grandfather of 9 grandchildren.
